Purpose or Ego

A woman silhouetted against the light of a low hanging moon. Her arms are raised above her head, and she appears to be holding the moon in her hands. The color palette is of warm browns.

There is nuance in the conversation of purpose versus ego. Inevitably there will be aspects of us that will be aligned more with purpose and some more with ego. Some people in our lives will be aligned with purpose and some with ego. Some parts of our work will be aligned with purpose and some with ego.

This time that we are living in calls for us to be clear eyed about the life we want to live. To do that  we can begin by asking ourselves if we are living or acting in alignment with purpose or from our ego.

No one can answer this for us but ourselves. But how do we know when we are aligned with purpose? And how do we know when we are aligned with ego? Or are we balanced between purpose and ego? To gain clarity we begin by asking more questions.

How to Know?

How to know when or if we are living more aligned with purpose or ego? We must go inward and ask. Each of us must ask ourselves the question: are we living on purpose or from ego? In this moment, this situation, are we acting on purpose or from ego?

Are we acting from guidance or thought? Are we acting for the greater good or are we harming others? Are we serving the needs of the many or the few? With love or with harm?

This post and blog for example, this me acting from purpose. I know it is because it is guided by Spirit and soul. Every word is guided and serves a purpose. Even when, or especially when, it is challenging. It serves a purpose and is purposeful.

Remember, we seek only to understand if we are aligned with purpose or ego, or balanced. There is nuance in this that only us and our soul can answer. Use discernment. Seek to understand, not to judge.

When asking these questions of ourselves, we must listen for the answer with our soul, our intuition, our gut. We must listen not with our ego mind, but with our soul. Our ego may lie to us but our souls’ never will.

With all that in mind our investigation can begin.

Where is it Coming From?

Where is it coming from? Is our motivation coming from our head and thoughts? Is it coming from a healed place or is it coming from our wounds? Is it coming from our ego mind? Or is our motivation coming from our heart and soul?

Are we moving forward from the guidance of Spirit and our soul? Or is it from the thoughts, opinions, and motivations of other people? Are we being influenced by someone who doesn’t know us or are we being inspired to be who we are meant to be?

Who are we Serving?

Who are we serving? Who is it serving? Are we serving ourselves selfishly and to the detriment of others? Are we serving our own needs and loving ourselves? Are we serving those we love?

Are we serving the collective out of expectation of getting something in return or are we serving from the perspective of love? Are we putting more love into the world or are we degrading the world?

The more we understand our own life and actions, the better we can determine our motivations. The more we understand our motivations, the better we can understand the motivations of those around us, in leadership, and in power.

What is the Purpose?

What is the purpose of our being, of our action? Does it increase peace, love, wisdom, abundance, and prosperity? Does it harm energies, people, places, things, or situations?

Does it touch our soul? Does it harm our heart? Does it harm others?

Purpose has a foundation in love. Sometimes ego does as well. There is nuance and this is where our discernment becomes most important. This is where judgement must be set aside.

We are not asking these questions to judge ourselves or others. Judgment is of ego. It creates duality. Judgment seeks to harm. Discernment seeks to understand. Purpose seeks to love.

Our world.

When we look at our world today, we can discern if leaders and organizations are working from purpose or from ego. Discern from both their words and actions.

We can see their motivations in what they say, but more importantly in what they do. We can see who they help and who they harm. Watch closely and use discernment.

Our Selves.

We too can look at our lives and discern if we are working from purpose or from ego. We can ask the questions, investigate ourselves and our motivations.

If we find we are already working with and from purpose, we can move ahead with that awareness. If we find we are working from ego, we have awareness now. We can choose to move forward from ego, balance purpose and ego, or we can shift into purpose.

We can choose purpose, love, and the greater good. We can choose leaders and organizations that reflect those values, and work to unseat those who selfishly work from ego.

We can choose to balance purpose and ego in order to live in the world that leans towards ego. We can choose to pursue our purpose, if and when we can. The more of us who live with purpose, on purpose, the better the world will be.

With awareness we choose the life we live, purpose or ego, or a well-balanced blend.
